Seventeen again

31 08 2006

I have been listening to some of Led Zeppelin’s music, and I feel good to say that I feel like I am seventeen again. Here’s the Led Zep Wiki. I guess puerile thoughts or thoughts of that strange phase called adolescence are detrimental to one’s professional and personal life since the liberties we take when we are children or teenagers are but liberties, and they are sure to imbue a lesson or a recognition of one’s mistakes in us. However, that’s a generalization. I was thrilled by the band’s epic sound, for want of a better phrase. I liked Jon Bonham’s drumming in one of the band’s most liked songs – Achilles’ Last Stand, which is about either the Atlas mountains in north Africa or else about Achillesthe legendary warrior even as Atlas is also mentioned in the song. The sound of Led Zeppelin is very much hard rock bordering on heavy metal, and much like Deep Purple (the other band which somehow makes me feel seventeen again), the sounds are novel, and there is a unique perfection in their music. Achilles’ Last Stand was one of Led Zeppelin lead guitarist Jimmy Page’s favourites, along with another song called Trampled Underfoot. Now this song is about cars and has undertones of sex (many songs about cars can be made to sound so, with a little effort… it is a result of the relationship we men share with them cars), and it really got me going. Raw lyrics, a superb repetitive riff, and powerful drums are all you need to get the teen in you restarted. I am sounding like some new fangled type of self effacing idiot, but I guess it is all okay once in a while, especially Led Zeppelin.

The other notable songs of theirs I have heard in the past week are the epic Kashmir, the quirky Misty Mountain Hop, the most amazing Since I’ve Been Loving You and the superb Dazed and Confused. I am inclined not to leave out a crude refrain which one of my friends from college made when someone talked about Led Zeppelin in some eulogy of theirs. This is perhaps keeping up the spirit of regression which I have presented in this post. Anyway, what he said went something like “Why’s he raving about Led Zep? As if they gave him his first f***, eh?”

PS: I tried not to mention Stairway to Heaven, Heartbreaker and Black Dog, since they’re very popular anyway. Count in Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll too. I find this band to be amazing.
